For many immigrants, language barriers often make life even more challenging than it ought to be. It’s difficult enough to leave one’s home country, family, friends and lifestyle in order to try something new. For many, immigrating to an English-speaking country is vital to their own survival. Fortunately, the United States is the “Land of Opportunity”, where entire eras of immigrants have been able to get ahead and succeed, even despite the language barrier. Other English language countries offer much opportunity for immigrants as well.

Simply put, knowing the language is not the only way to succeed in an English-speaking country, but it definitely helps tremendously. Below is an outline of some of the ways knowing the language can help you succeed in an English-speaking country.

Getting a Job
The process for finding work is difficult enough as it is without having to worry about doing everything in a language you don’t understand. Having a basic knowledge of the English language will help you navigate the process. First, it is important to be able to understand what job advertisements and position descriptions say.

If you cannot understand what the requirements for any given job are, you will not know if you are qualified for candidacy. Next, you need to have sufficient English writing skills in order to prepare a resume or CV. You should be able to summarize your experience and qualifications in a way that is pertinent to whichever position you are applying for. Your English writing skills should be developed enough to be able to write an effective cover letter as well, as this will serve as your personal introduction to hiring companies. Finally, you must be able to speak enough English to communicate your skills and strengths during a job interview.

Getting Housing
Finding a place to live is another task that is much easier to accomplish if you have English skills. First, you’ll need to be able to read classified ads announcing available rentals or homes for sale. Next, you should be able to speak enough English to be able to call for an appointment and discuss simple matters such as how much the rent is, how many bedrooms and baths the place has, whether pets are accepted, etcetera. You will also need to be able to read enough English to be able to understand and complete the rental application. If you are buying a home, you’ll need to understand much more complex paperwork, (if you do not have the necessary English skills and are buying a home, you should use the services of a translator.)

Getting Ahead
Anyone can live in an English-speaking country and never learn the language. To truly succeed, however, learning English is crucial. Having the language skills will not only help you secure work and housing, but also education for you and your children. Learning English will also help you feel confident and allow you to stand up for yourself and speak up if ever your rights should come into question.

Online English School offers free English lessons to help you learn English at your own pace and provide you with all the materials you will need to have you reading, writing and speaking English in no time.

Did you know that machine workers are the number two hardest job in the United States to fill, right after engineers? While machining isn’t by any means a glamorous profession, it is one that has great benefits, job security and stability, and a great sense of camaraderie and pride within the industry. So why are machine jobs so hard to fill? Well, unfortunately society in general still thinks that machining is the same that it was nearly fifty years ago.

Fortunately, we know that’s not true. We know understand that machining as a profession has come a long way, and as such, so have modern machine shops. From rotary vacuum pumps to welding and lathes, the machine shop has been polished up and streamlined. While before, most people would imagine that machine shops are dirty, dusty and uncivilized. They now have newer facilities with newer machines. It was also previously thought that working with machinery was dangerous, but there are more safeguards put in place for workers than ever, ensuring their safety while at the shop.

So, it is easy to see why some would not seek out machining as their career of choice. You can imagine that it’s not what parents imagine their kids doing as they go off to university to be doctors, lawyers and teachers. But machining is a lucrative choice in careers and can make as much money as a lot of the other professions out there. When choosing a career, reform the way you think about machining in general. If you love to work with your hands and create, then the modern machine shops were built for people like you. The new, organized shops offer great training and benefits, as well as a fast track to success due to insider promotion.

Perhaps, if more people visited modern machine shops and saw how smoothly the entire factory system ran and how safe and organized they were, more would consider machining as a great choice in career. Skilled labor is a dying industry, and the only way to revive it is with new recruits who have great ideas and a yearning for advancement in their careers and lives. Check out a modern machine shop near you and see what types of openings and opportunities they have available to you. You may be surprised at what you find. The modern machine industry has changed by leaps and bounds, it’s nothing like the movies anymore.

One of the most lucrative careers, plumbing has gained considerable important in the last few years. With the definite lack of skilled workers, a number of institutes have come up that provide comprehensive plumbing courses. Of course, simple quick-fixes can be done without undergoing any training. However, those looking at plumbing as a full-time career option would be better placed with formal training.

What Do The Courses In Plumbing Include?

To become a licensed plumber, you would probably need to join an institute to get the basic know-how. Work your way as an apprentice and move on to gain complete experience. Subsequently, you may even start your own plumbing company. There are several training centers that provide a number of courses, depending on what your requirement is. Most courses do not require you to have any previous training, since you would be taught the basics as well as advanced details regarding plumbing.

Most of the courses that teach plumbing do not require any special skill sets except the ability to understand and the willingness to work hard. The courses are not very expensive and fees generally depend on the depth of the subject as well as the areas that you wish to specialize in. The plumbing courses offered by the institutes cover all aspects of the task, including theories as well as practical assignments for a hands-on experience. The courses are mostly held Monday to Friday for about 6-7 hours.

Some of the common aspects of plumbing that the courses cover are:

- Plumbing health and safety
- Fittings and systems
- How to solder
- Plumbing of pipe work
- Copper pipe work
- Fitting and changing valves, taps, cisterns, and cylinders
- Installing plastic tubes
- Simple plumbing
- Installing bathroom fixtures
- Dealing with soil and waste pipes
- Radiators installation
- Identifying problem areas
- Apprenticeship under a senior plumber

Once you complete the course successfully, the next step is to get a certification of plumbing. To become a certified plumber, you would be required to take a practical test, following which a diploma in plumbing would be provided to you. The certification program is a part of the plumbing course and requires that you fulfill the following criteria:

- You must be at least 18 years old and must have done at least 3 years of apprenticeship. Couple this with sufficient relevant experience under a senior plumber.
- You must be able to work unsupervised. Proper understanding of documents and technical diagrams is a must. At the same time, you must have a fair idea of how much a certain plumbing job is likely to cost. As such, knowledge of mathematics is an added advantage.
- Clear communication with customers is a must. This is especially important when you need to explain to clients the exact nature of your problem.
- Physical fitness is a must. You must be able to lift and move around heavy weights.

Of course, even with the growing importance of skilled plumbers, the entire process might appear complex. While junior level plumbers earn less, once you establish yourself, payments turn extremely lucrative. With proper guidance and training through plumbing courses, you can even build your own business and work towards achieving a permanent customer base.

One of the most upcoming sectors in the construction business, plumbing requires the services of a dedicated professional. As against common perception, plumbing is not an easy job and requires a number of calculations to be done. In addition, plumbers must also be adept in communicating effectively with the client so as to give them a simple understanding of the exact nature of problem. Keeping these things in mind, a number of institutes now offer plumber training courses, both long term and short term. As per one’s choice, the course may be selected.

These courses offer theoretical as well as practical sessions. In a number of cases, institutions might also offer placement options on successful completion of the course. However, before you go on to select the course you must analyze your skill sets. If you can handle hard work, which may or may not get dirty, then plumbing is definitely for you. The duration of plumber training courses depend entirely on the kind of course selected. The fee structure also depends on the institution enrolled in and the course selected.

There are a whole range of training institutions that can be found on the internet. It is recommended to ask around for recommendations and try to contact teachers who impart this knowledge. With the advancement in technology, plumbing training can also be done online. You may register with a credible website that would be responsible for sending you details, study materials and any interactive videos. At the same time, the online institutions also often conduct regular tests and assignments for understanding your progress. On completion of online courses, you will be skilled in domestic as well as commercial plumbing business.

Among the several important lessons that are provided are:

- Managing the health and safety of plumbers
- How to work with fittings
- Joint bending, soldering and working with copper pipes and simple pipes
- Domestic plumbing
- Working with valves, taps cylinders and cisterns
- Unclog drains and pipes
- Identifying problem areas
- Regular repair and maintenance work

While a limited part of the training is theory-centric, a large part of what you would learn depends on the kind of practical experience that you get. Most training institutes provide opportunities to students to work as apprentices to senior plumbers. This hands-on experience is how a plumber is able to judge a certain problem and produce solutions thereof. Herein, it is important to note that it may take up to 3 years for an apprentice to become a certified plumber.

A few important points to remember before enrolling in plumber training courses are:

- There are likely to be instances when the work gets messy. Training can only be provided to deal with certain situations. It is almost impossible to judge the kind of situation that might arise during any plumbing job.
- A good physical and mental health is a must. Plumbing jobs involve a large amount of strenuous movements as well as a whole range of mathematical calculations. The plumber should be able to explain clearly to the client the exact nature of problem and the solution. He must also be able to understand manuals and details on paper clearly.
- An understanding of technical drawings is a must. More than once, the student might have to produce a diagrammatic representation of the issue and how he intends solving it.

Once you select the right institution providing the correct plumber training courses, plumbing turns out to be a highly lucrative career option. In fact with the right training, you may not only be able to join a credited company, but you could even start your own plumbing company. At the same time, you may even share your knowledge with those who are interested in learning the basic skills of plumbing.
