“Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.” – Herbert Otto

I have a friend who creates art quilts. Art quilts are just that: expressive art that uses a quilt instead of a canvas as its medium.

She has begun to achieve some notoriety for her art and when you see her quilts hung next to quilts that have been created from a pre-formed pattern, you notice how alive and engaging her work is compared to the others.

I have talked to her at length about her creative process. She gets a feeling about something or is inspired by something in nature. She then places fabric that seems to represent that feeling on her ‘creating wall.’

She continues the process for days or weeks, rearranging colors and patterns seeing primarily with her inner eye what the piece needs to be. It’s only after the quilt has been created that she knows what it is about and what the title should be. In other words, the inner dictates the outer through the medium of her creative process.

I think our careers are like that.

We feel drawn to certain work. We want to express ourselves in the world in a specific way. We feel a need to share our gifts with the larger world.

But we may not always know precisely what we are doing, or why, until it is created. And that can take a year, a season or a lifetime to understand.

I do know that if we pay attention to what wants to be expressed; we will overcome any obstacle, undergo any sacrifice and stick persistently to a goal until it comes alive.

Michelangelo was once asked how he created such beautiful sculptures. “It’s easy,” he said, “I simply cut away everything that is not the statue.”

Creating from the inside out takes courage. As the quotation above says, it also takes the willingness to experiment with one’s life.

I’ve observed that what so often happens is that people allow their careers to become jobs. They remain on the surface, never touching or disturbing that inner core of passion, desire and meaning.

It feels scary to open that door to the depths of who we are. It feels uncomfortable; it gets us off-balance; we can’t see what’s ahead and what will come out.

In our rational, goal-setting world, we are told we need to know our goals in order to reach them. But what if our goals are felt, but not known? What if we don’t know what we should achieve until we have achieved it?

What if we are called to be the artists of our own lives, creating as we go, not always sure what will be created, knowing only when it’s done what it is?

Can we handle that? Have we the courage and staying power to interact with our own creative drives and see what happens? Do we dare to take that risk?

These are the real questions that underlie any career shift we are considering. Unfortunately, we don’t usually ask ourselves these questions.

We stay with the superficial: Have I got the talent for this? Can I afford it?

Should I do it now or wait until the economy gets better?

These necessary, but ultimately superficial questions often block the awareness of the deeper questions. But it’s the deeper questions that lead us to the deepest and most satisfying changes.

Are you ready to risk asking those deeper questions? Are you ready to trust that the powerful, hidden part of you knows what is needed and can lead you to deeply meaningful work?

Are you willing to make the contribution you came here to make? Are you willing to not know for awhile in order to arrive at a place of greater knowing?

Are you ready to grow? Are you ready?

When looking for a job, it is crucial that your skills match the job. If the skills don’t match, then there is a good chance that your resume will be passed up and the employer will move on to the rest. That is what you don’t want to happen.

What you want to happen is the employer look at your resume and think it is quite impressive because your skills match what it is they are looking for. This is the one way that you’re going to land the interview in a work world that is very competitive. With so many workers losing their jobs, there are many more people vying for jobs than what they used to.

Making your skills match

Too many individuals create a resume that they copy and send to every employer that they are interested in. This is not a good idea because every employer requires a different skill set. Although you may possess the skills that each employer wants in an employee, the resume is not emphasizing that fact. The resume has to stand out to each employer in a unique way.

For instance:

- If you have experience in inventory and that is something that is important to a prospective employer, you will need to make sure that is listed on the resume. However, inventory may not be important with another employer, so that is not something you want to emphasize.

- If applying for a certain position, make sure you show the skills that the position requires even if you haven’t held that same position in a past job before. Just because you never did the exact same job doesn’t mean that you are out for the count. Remember that many in superior positions have those below them do their job duties for them.

- Always make sure you list any certifications or other skills that are important to the job at hand. Employers do look for these things. Even if you don’t think a certification is important, it is important to list it.

You have to do whatever is possible to make your skills match the job that you hope to get.

Can’t do it on your own?

If this is something you don’t feel you can do all by yourself, you can get some help. You can hire an HR consultant to help you out.

An HR consultant knows exactly what employers look for in an employee. They also know exactly what has to be done in order to make skills match what a job wants in an employee. They can help you pick out the skills you have from past jobs, the valid certifications, and other important aspects and make them fit perfectly on your resume.

An HR consultant can also help you structure your resume in a way that makes it attractive for the prospective employer. That way they don’t scan through it and place it in the “do not hire” stack. Instead, the prospective employer is able to scan through the resume and easily see those things that are important to the job that they are hiring for. The layout has to be easy to follow, the resume has to be easy to read, and it simply has to stand out from the rest so that it does not find itself with the rest of the rejected resumes.

So to have that amazing resume that matches your skills with the job you are applying for, you now know what you have to do to get the job done. Hiring an HR consultant to help you with this will give you a much better chance at a job than those who try doing it on their own.

A good HR consulting firm can help you and your organization to outperform. An HR audit is a quick way to identify what is working well in your HR department and find opportunities to improve.

The days of working for the same company for forty years are long gone. More and more people in their mid-life are making career changes today than ever before. Whether it’s due to corporate restructuring or taking on a new challenge in life, changing careers after several years of working in one field is definitely becoming more popular. To make the most of your career change, you should follow these steps.

1. Take stock of your current situation

Some people may know exactly what they’d like to do in their career change, but others may not be sure what field they’d like to enter. If you’re in the latter group you know that you want to make a change but aren’t sure how to go about doing it. It may help to analyze where you are right now on a emotional, financial and physical level. What do you desire out of this change in your life? Do you want a challenging career or are you looking to downshift your lifestyle? You may be stressed out from your current career but that stress may be stemming from a variety of different things including work environment, life goals or poor health.

2. Analyze your passions

If you’re making a career change to have a more satisfying life, you need to analyze your passions and interests. Although you may not be able to get a job in your favorite hobby, you could look for a career that mimics some of the things you like about that hobby. By writing down a list of your favorite things to do and the experiences that make you the most satisfied, you’ll come closer to finding a career that will really excite you.

3. Set your priorities

Career change affects everyone differently. Your change will be determined by the benefits your want to maximize and the drawbacks you want to minimize. For example, for some people, future salary is not a matter of concern. They’ve built up enough savings and assets that they are purely looking for something that satisfies their souls. Most people aren’t quite this lucky and need to balance their desires with a livable income. Write down the situations you want to avoid, like working a variable schedule, and the experiences you want to look for, like being part of a team atmosphere.

4. Develop a plan and follow through

Once you’ve done some soul searching and have narrowed down the type of career you’d like to pursue, you need to develop a plan to get there. Do research online and consider interviewing someone who is already in the field to find out what kind of skills or experience you need to gain. Determine if there are any training programs you need to complete or skills you need to improve before you can make the switch. Once you’re sure that you can make the change, start looking for opportunities in the new field that are a match for your skill set.
