The days of working for the same company for forty years are long gone. More and more people in their mid-life are making career changes today than ever before. Whether it’s due to corporate restructuring or taking on a new challenge in life, changing careers after several years of working in one field is definitely becoming more popular. To make the most of your career change, you should follow these steps.
1. Take stock of your current situation
Some people may know exactly what they’d like to do in their career change, but others may not be sure what field they’d like to enter. If you’re in the latter group you know that you want to make a change but aren’t sure how to go about doing it. It may help to analyze where you are right now on a emotional, financial and physical level. What do you desire out of this change in your life? Do you want a challenging career or are you looking to downshift your lifestyle? You may be stressed out from your current career but that stress may be stemming from a variety of different things including work environment, life goals or poor health.
2. Analyze your passions
If you’re making a career change to have a more satisfying life, you need to analyze your passions and interests. Although you may not be able to get a job in your favorite hobby, you could look for a career that mimics some of the things you like about that hobby. By writing down a list of your favorite things to do and the experiences that make you the most satisfied, you’ll come closer to finding a career that will really excite you.
3. Set your priorities
Career change affects everyone differently. Your change will be determined by the benefits your want to maximize and the drawbacks you want to minimize. For example, for some people, future salary is not a matter of concern. They’ve built up enough savings and assets that they are purely looking for something that satisfies their souls. Most people aren’t quite this lucky and need to balance their desires with a livable income. Write down the situations you want to avoid, like working a variable schedule, and the experiences you want to look for, like being part of a team atmosphere.
4. Develop a plan and follow through
Once you’ve done some soul searching and have narrowed down the type of career you’d like to pursue, you need to develop a plan to get there. Do research online and consider interviewing someone who is already in the field to find out what kind of skills or experience you need to gain. Determine if there are any training programs you need to complete or skills you need to improve before you can make the switch. Once you’re sure that you can make the change, start looking for opportunities in the new field that are a match for your skill set.
