When you were growing up, how many times did your parents tell you that you can do anything you set your mind to? How often did you daydream about being a star or finding the cure for cancer? Well, the trouble is that as we grow older, reality has a wicked tendency to puncture our hopes. The Great American Dream is replaced with: Welcome to America. Get a job and pay your bills. Survive.
Yet every once in awhile, we see a moving performance on the big screen or hear a musician in a coffee shop on a Saturday night and think longingly, “That could be me.” But the next day, we get out of bed, hoping for nothing more than what your nine-to-five can offer.
That is the trouble–although we so often start out with big dreams, we lose sight of them because day-to-day life gets in the way. Our persistence wears down, and we become discouraged or even jaded.
If I were sitting in front of you today, I would look you square in the eye and say, “Throw away all of your excuses. Live the life of your dreams–starting today.”
Many individuals wonder if they truly have enough talent to succeed amidst furious competition. So you might want to find out! Take a class specializing in your interest at a local community college, university, or studio. Invest in acting lessons or try an advanced guitar course.
Doing this will not only provide you with honest feedback about your abilities; you will be able to associate with similarly-minded people who will teach you to become better, and your ambition may be fueled by a regular dose of whatever it is you are passionate about. You may even be able to mingle with professionals in your chosen trade who have valuable connections to help you on your way.
The entertainment industry is a very difficult one to break into. There are the lucky few who have done so by accident or a handful of those have experienced a fortunate encounter with the right person at the right time. Do not count on this happening to you–most have to really work for it!
So get your face out there. Participate in singing competitions, act in local theatrical productions, participate in student films, or arrange to play in the corner cafe. Doing these things may not land you your “lucky break,” but it will ensure that you are constantly working, even if it isn’t always for that multi-million dollar paycheck.
Finally, make contact with an agent. It is crucial you do your research to find someone who works specifically with your needs as a developing artist. You can never ask too many questions–signing with an agent who does not quite mesh with your requirements can end up being worse than not having one at all!
Above all, remain persistent. You may have to hold onto your nine-to-five for awhile, but hope and hard work are the primary ingredients to the successful career you have always dreamed about.
Are you looking for an agent who is spiritual, optimistic, and dedicated to your success? Then who you are looking for is Craig McKenzie! To ensure your star is the one on the rise, check out Craig McKenzie (http://www.craig-mckenzie.com). Art Gib is a freelance writer.
