Did you know that machine workers are the number two hardest job in the United States to fill, right after engineers? While machining isn’t by any means a glamorous profession, it is one that has great benefits, job security and stability, and a great sense of camaraderie and pride within the industry. So why are machine jobs so hard to fill? Well, unfortunately society in general still thinks that machining is the same that it was nearly fifty years ago.

Fortunately, we know that’s not true. We know understand that machining as a profession has come a long way, and as such, so have modern machine shops. From rotary vacuum pumps to welding and lathes, the machine shop has been polished up and streamlined. While before, most people would imagine that machine shops are dirty, dusty and uncivilized. They now have newer facilities with newer machines. It was also previously thought that working with machinery was dangerous, but there are more safeguards put in place for workers than ever, ensuring their safety while at the shop.

So, it is easy to see why some would not seek out machining as their career of choice. You can imagine that it’s not what parents imagine their kids doing as they go off to university to be doctors, lawyers and teachers. But machining is a lucrative choice in careers and can make as much money as a lot of the other professions out there. When choosing a career, reform the way you think about machining in general. If you love to work with your hands and create, then the modern machine shops were built for people like you. The new, organized shops offer great training and benefits, as well as a fast track to success due to insider promotion.

Perhaps, if more people visited modern machine shops and saw how smoothly the entire factory system ran and how safe and organized they were, more would consider machining as a great choice in career. Skilled labor is a dying industry, and the only way to revive it is with new recruits who have great ideas and a yearning for advancement in their careers and lives. Check out a modern machine shop near you and see what types of openings and opportunities they have available to you. You may be surprised at what you find. The modern machine industry has changed by leaps and bounds, it’s nothing like the movies anymore.
