Croupiers are the dealers or attendants at casino tables who deal cards, work the roulette wheel or take general responsibility for the betting which happens on the casino floor.
Due to new legislation passed in 2006 a wave of new casino’s have already started to emerge in the UK and more are expected to follow. Although the expansion of the gaming industry has slowed recently with the rest of the leisure economy UK casino’s still have a bright future and all these new casino’s are going to need croupiers to work the tables.
Croupier’s are skilled professionals, a fact often overlooked, who have a lot of responsibility. They have to know the casino games they work on inside out in order to move the game along quickly and be alert to cheating at the table which could lose the casino money. Although they are overseen by a higher level of management and closely monitored through the use of CCTV croupiers ultimately accept responsibility for the money bet on their table.
The best croupiers will be excellent players themselves but a range of softer skills are also required. The aim of the croupier is to keep players on the table as long as possible and maximise their betting so the casino has the best chance of winning more money from them. The longer you play in a casino the more change you have of losing and the casino has of winning. Therefore as a croupier you need to keep the game moving quickly while being attentive to each player and humour their often eccentric personalities.
Good arithmetical skills are also essential as you would expect. Many casino’s will give their potential croupiers maths tests as well as testing their ability handling cards.
Croupier jobs suit people with flexible lifestyles as most shifts are at night and often run all night until the early hours of the morning. For this reason most croupiers are young and single, it is also a popular job for university students in larger cities.
You will need to be comfortable working in a often stressful environment and you need to be free from moral hang-ups around gambling.
Formal academic qualifications are not necessary, although there are some courses that give an introduction to the sector. For example, Blackpool and Fylde College offers an Advanced Diploma in Casino Operations. The course lasts for 12 weeks and starts with intensive training in croupier skills, focusing on roulette, blackjack and poker. A BSc (Hons) Business Economics with Gambling Studies degree is available at Salford University.
Croupier work is not well paid as standard. Most will be on hourly rates of around 8 pounds per hour. However tipping of casino employees is now allowed at most UK casinos. Tips from players, particularly at casino’s which attract a more affluent clientele can be substantial and easily match the salary of the croupier. As such jobs in top casino’s in places like Las Vegas are sought after and the application process is rigorous.
