We have all been warned about the current economic downturn and the consequences of this on the employment prospects of everyone in the developing world. But as the UK, America and Europe slip into a worldwide recession, we aim to take a positive look at the employment available for those seeking London jobs. Maybe the internet revolution can save the capital’s workforce from joining the dole queue, to find out, we need to establish which industries are keeping the capital economically afloat, and which are threatening to add to the unemployment problem.

London is known for a thriving tourist industry; and as a cultural hub, has the capacity to attract visitors from all over the world as well as it’s fair share of people looking for an opportunity to make a career for themselves. Unfortunately, right now, the economic situation has led to people keeping their purse strings well and truly drawn; making jobs within the service industry difficult to come by, and those that are currently keeping people employed teetering on the edge of collapse.

A similar pattern is being seen in the retail industry, and as you are probably well aware, London has it’s fair share of shopping havens, and unless these continue to trade, they could face closure, which would be a terrible thing for the streets of London as well as those who are reliant on London jobs. Thankfully, although the recession is a very real and powerful ball in motion, it appears that for those that have money to spend, they are still willing to spend it.

In the world of both retail and the service industry, the need for the continued spending is crucial for the economy. The knock on effect of a person not buying a coffee for example can have an exponential affect on other industries. To prevent this happening and to keep people in employment, spending must be maintained. For those looking for employment within these industries in the capital, this is not the most positive news in the world, but London has a higher chance of offering stable employment than many other areas of the UK.

Some economists are blaming the trend towards online shopping for the demise of the more simple service and retail industries on the high street. If better bargains are found online and more easily, then high street shops become redundant, and the less visitors a shop gets, the fewer people that pass by to buy a coffee or a sandwich to keep another business going, which in turn means that the local baker or deli has less call for their products. It is easy to see the spiralling negative affect this can have, but online industries could actually have a positive effect on these types of London Jobs.

The capital’s largest industry is in fact in finance, and boasts being the world’s largest financial centre. Ironic as it sounds, the fact that it is the financial sector is running into problems that could actually be the thing that keeps the demand for employees up. Whilst there is the demand for highly skilled finance workers to help combat the economic crisis, there are people with expendable income to keep other workers in a job. Online trading and computer based employment is still a growing sector, and could well be the hinge that keeps job seekers looking for London jobs.

Your Career Service keeps stressing that even though you’re unemployed, you still have a job. It’s the job of finding a job. In order for your job finding campaign to succeed, you need professional accountability.

All professionals need to prepare. Lawyers, for example, need to carefully prepare cases before they can advise a client or set foot into a courtroom.

Your professional role in a job search is to do the same. When you plan and prepare your job campaign with the same professionalism that you would a work project for your boss or for a client, your search will be a smashing success.

Because a job job finding campaign takes preparation, oranization, and discipline, make a project out of your job hunt. You, of course, are the project leader in charge of making it work. For that, you need to take responsibility for your search by organizing and prioritizing the steps needed to land the job you want.

I’ve worked with job finding clients who try to combine a job search with fixing up their homes and getting caught up with personal chores. Waiting. instead of jumping into your search, can cause great harm. The best time to begin your search is immediately after you lose a job. Why? Because you’re in a working mode. When you just hang out for awhile, your fighting edge begins to dissipate.

So if your goal is to work sooner rather than later, to actively manage your job finding project is a must.

Each year — in good and economies and bad — millions of people change jobs. And millions of jobs are created. All you have to do is find one of them by developing a job search strategy that enables you to market and sell yourself successfully.

You’ll find lots of posts on Your Career Service that show you how to prepare for various aspects of your job hunt, like “How to prepare for an interview.”

Article Title: How Not To Stereotype Essex Jobs

Growing up in the town of Chelmsford, Essex, was an experience no different from the average British citizen – the only difference is I grew up wanting to work in a big city like London and succeed in my chosen career in the creative industry. For me Essex was not the best place to find a good job for a steady career progression with a decent salary package…or so I had thought! Like many other people I felt that there were plenty of opportunities in larger areas.

As a young girl I was heavily influenced by the idea that in order to get a good secure job, one would need to endure many years of studying at a reputable school and then work towards a degree at the end of it all. Whilst this notion is not bad advice at all, this was the fuel to my motivation for moving this big fish out of a small town. My first thoughts after graduating many years later, was to apply for a job based in London instead of settling for any of the abundant Essex jobs available at the time.

My mistake was to make a move towards an area where there were thousands of others striving to make their mark in the employment world. For me Essex jobs were all low paid, staffs were under appreciated and the benefits were almost non-existent. It did not dawn on me how difficult it was to secure a job in London and manage the hectic train journeys every day.

Even though the salary was only marginally better than the rates in Essex, I was still struggling to round up a bit of cash at the end of receiving my pay cheque and struggled to keep up with other payments. Furthermore there was the pressure of waking up at the crack of dawn and rushing to catch that train, where unfortunately for me, I would be left standing as all the seats were taken. For me being a commuter was tiresome and time consuming.

My former stereotypes of Essex jobs were beginning to waver and I was soon beginning to regret my decision to reject the idea of working in my home county. It would appear that the people I had encountered in the past were much happier to travel locally rather than trek the extra few miles for what appeared to be a better pay package. In hindsight working in the city provides more opportunities to grow within the company, however for those struggling to find their feet in the city may benefit in searching within their own home counties.

As it were Essex has a much more fruitful history when it comes to employment, with many people having worked in the skilled profession. Job agencies and recruitment consultants in these areas are able to find work within specialist trades, as there is a high demand for skilled workers.

Historically Essex was known for its many skills and trades. These skills were highly regarded by wealthy individuals from all over the world, which also included members of the Royal family. The skills that were most prevalent in Essex were that of the Bay and Say trading (wool trading), making garments, spinning, sewing and weaving.

As time passed on the industrial revolution took over causing many of the skilled workers to succumb to potentially losing their jobs due to machinery taking over the production of clothing. Between the 1500s through to the 1700s the production of gunpowder took over the clothing manufacturing business, which became a primary form of making money. Gunpowder production was so lucrative it opened up 1200 more jobs during the early 1900s. This maintained its success soon after the production of the railway system.

With this in mind the next step I made was to consult a careers advisor about my options. As I searched for new Essex jobs, I found that there were plenty of opportunities in various sectors – it was just a matter of looking! With a little push and nudge from a recruitment agency I soon found myself on my way to an interview with a very reputable company. It was a matter of time before I landed a job only 15 minutes away from where I lived, making my mornings much more bearable!

For graduates out there looking to make a step onto the career ladder, it helps to keep your options open and not limit them to one sector. Where I had felt Essex did not offer much in terms of career progression, it was in fact a good place to find a much more diverse range of employment opportunities. Of course, where you decide to work depends upon your career choice and decision to relocate. However, one thing to bear in mind, when making a decision to commute or relocate, always make sure you become familiar with the area first and understand the issues you may face when making that decision.

As a graduate it will take time before you find a steady job, but keep your eyes peeled for opportunities that may lurk in your catchment area. Job agencies and recruitment consultants will help, therefore, make use of their services and take on board what they have to say. This will help you become better prepared for any upcoming interviews and improve the look of your CV.

Anna Stenning has found Essex jobs better suited to her and her abilities which had helped her secure a steady job locally. For more on securing a steady career visit http://www.prime-appointments.co.uk/
