Growing up in the town of Chelmsford, Essex, was an experience no different from the average British citizen – the only difference is I grew up wanting to work in a big city like London and succeed in my chosen career in the creative industry. For me Essex was not the best place to find a good job for a steady career progression with a decent salary package…or so I had thought! Like many other people I felt that there were plenty of opportunities in larger areas.
As a young girl I was heavily influenced by the idea that in order to get a good secure job, one would need to endure many years of studying at a reputable school and then work towards a degree at the end of it all. Whilst this notion is not bad advice at all, this was the fuel to my motivation for moving this big fish out of a small town. My first thoughts after graduating many years later, was to apply for a job based in London instead of settling for any of the abundant Essex jobs available at the time.
My mistake was to make a move towards an area where there were thousands of others striving to make their mark in the employment world. For me Essex jobs were all low paid, staffs were under appreciated and the benefits were almost non-existent. It did not dawn on me how difficult it was to secure a job in London and manage the hectic train journeys every day.
Even though the salary was only marginally better than the rates in Essex, I was still struggling to round up a bit of cash at the end of receiving my pay cheque and struggled to keep up with other payments. Furthermore there was the pressure of waking up at the crack of dawn and rushing to catch that train, where unfortunately for me, I would be left standing as all the seats were taken. For me being a commuter was tiresome and time consuming.
My former stereotypes of Essex jobs were beginning to waver and I was soon beginning to regret my decision to reject the idea of working in my home county. It would appear that the people I had encountered in the past were much happier to travel locally rather than trek the extra few miles for what appeared to be a better pay package. In hindsight working in the city provides more opportunities to grow within the company, however for those struggling to find their feet in the city may benefit in searching within their own home counties.
As it were Essex has a much more fruitful history when it comes to employment, with many people having worked in the skilled profession. Job agencies and recruitment consultants in these areas are able to find work within specialist trades, as there is a high demand for skilled workers.
Historically Essex was known for its many skills and trades. These skills were highly regarded by wealthy individuals from all over the world, which also included members of the Royal family. The skills that were most prevalent in Essex were that of the Bay and Say trading (wool trading), making garments, spinning, sewing and weaving.
As time passed on the industrial revolution took over causing many of the skilled workers to succumb to potentially losing their jobs due to machinery taking over the production of clothing. Between the 1500s through to the 1700s the production of gunpowder took over the clothing manufacturing business, which became a primary form of making money. Gunpowder production was so lucrative it opened up 1200 more jobs during the early 1900s. This maintained its success soon after the production of the railway system.
With this in mind the next step I made was to consult a careers advisor about my options. As I searched for new Essex jobs, I found that there were plenty of opportunities in various sectors – it was just a matter of looking! With a little push and nudge from a recruitment agency I soon found myself on my way to an interview with a very reputable company. It was a matter of time before I landed a job only 15 minutes away from where I lived, making my mornings much more bearable!
For graduates out there looking to make a step onto the career ladder, it helps to keep your options open and not limit them to one sector. Where I had felt Essex did not offer much in terms of career progression, it was in fact a good place to find a much more diverse range of employment opportunities. Of course, where you decide to work depends upon your career choice and decision to relocate. However, one thing to bear in mind, when making a decision to commute or relocate, always make sure you become familiar with the area first and understand the issues you may face when making that decision.
As a graduate it will take time before you find a steady job, but keep your eyes peeled for opportunities that may lurk in your catchment area. Job agencies and recruitment consultants will help, therefore, make use of their services and take on board what they have to say. This will help you become better prepared for any upcoming interviews and improve the look of your CV.
